Tips for Photographing Kids

Where is the best place to take pictures of my kids?

It's best to take pictures of kids in their "natural habitat." Photographing kids at play requires lots of running around but definitely produces the best results. Parks and playgrounds are great places to let them loose and get natural light which is always my preference. I suggest bringing toys and snacks to help keep kids in good spirits. What time is best for photographing my children. Always have a camera ready for those random moments but if you want to set up a "photoshoot" for your little ones keep this in mind. Remember that midday sun casts harsh shadows so get out when the sun is lower in the sky. If you're shooting outdoors morning or late afternoon works best.

What clothes look best on camera?

Keep things simple. Solid colors and clothes without busy patterns make people stand out. Steer clear of black or white as they tend to disappear on camera. When photographing Holiday photos use colors that invoke the feeling of the season.

What's the best way to capture my child's personality?

Keep your camera close on your child's face. Let their expressions tell the story. When composing your pictures try and crop the image so that distracting objects are out of the shot. Always focus on the eyes and your child's natural spark will shine through.
